The summertime staple known as “Farmers’ Market and More!” will return on June 1. This year, however, a new location is in store. That location is Railroad Park. Main Street Tehachapi recently received approval from the city of Tehachapi to utilize the park, which is currently considered by many to be an under-utilized asset.
Positive comments are being received by Main Street about the great opportunities this new venue will offer. Shade trees and grass, of course, will create a much cooler and more comfortable environment.
While the market will now be off the pavement, there will be traffic and parking issues to address. The city has agreed to close the north lane of Tehachapi Boulevard in front of the park. This will create a buffer zone between vehicular traffic and the market activities.
Also, the city intends to provide lighted signage to slow traffic and possibly a crossing guard for the crosswalk leading from Robinson Street to the park. Going a step further, the planned three-way stop signs at the intersection of Tehachapi Boulevard and Robinson Street may be created prior to the June 1 opening of Farmers’ Market. Village Marketplace owner, Shirley Fuller, has agreed to make her parking lot available to Farmers’ market customers. Farmers’ Market vendors are expressing their delight about this new location. Colleen Kohnen of Kohnen’s Country Bakery said, “I just can not tell you how excited we are to be back at
Farmers’ Market this year, especially at Railroad Park.” That type of sentiment is being received from most of the vendors. Main Street Tehachapi has begun distributing the applications to prospective vendors.
