What do a retired cop, a minister, a few retired corporate executives and a fireman all have in common? They are the artisans who will be featured during the month of May in the fine arts room at Gallery ‘N’ Gifts.
Jerry DeArmond, Jim Dinsmore (the minister), Tom Feeley (the cop), Don Golden, George Grela (the fireman) and Les Robison are being brought together from nearby communities to display their unique art forms in wood, such as fine wood turned bowls, hand crafted boxes and carved sculptures.
Pictures of intarsia mosaics will grace the walls in the gallery in May, complimenting the delicate, painted carvings of fish, realistic shorebirds or woodland songbirds. Other larger sculptures will include graceful dolphins, whimsical busts complete with palm root hair, bears and turtles and other characters straight out of the west.
Always a favorite, the lathe turned vessels ranging from small bowls to charger size platters, will also be on display. The turned pieces are made from domestic and exotic woods from around the world and sometimes of a laminated marriage of woods which makes each piece especially unique.
As one of the artists put it, “I love the warmth of wood and the fact each piece is different and has its own story to tell.”
Exotic and domestic woods also are used in the construction of specialty jewelry and whatnot boxes and those will be featured as well. Each piece is made with precision and has a finish that is silky to the touch and would be a perfect adornment for any room. Laminated woods often enhance the visual enjoyment of these finely crafted works.
Though these six wood artisans have different backgrounds and experiences they are all are of one mind when they speak of their love and passion for creating works of art from wood. Whether they begin their tasks with a chain saw, a lathe or hand chisels, the process of developing a hunk of wood into a finely finished work of art is extremely satisfying.
Come meet these interesting artists at the reception on Saturday, May 6, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and see their wonderful works of art. Gallery ‘N’ Gifts will have their works on continuous display throughout the month of May.
Gallery ‘N’ Gifts, the showroom for Tehachapi Valley Arts Association, is located at 100 W. Tehachapi Blvd. and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
