It is that time of year when many people are planting gardens. Lots of us love to grow flowers or vegetables near our homes.
But it takes a lot of work to till the ground, plant the seeds and provide water before you can enjoy the results. Even more serious gardeners will also give the plants fertilizer, prune unproductive branches and care for their gardens each day.
Jesus said, in John 15, that we are like branches in a garden and God is like a very serious gardener. God cares for us and provides for us every day by giving us the nourishment we need and by taking away things that would harm us.
Jesus is our main source of spiritual growth. Just as branches do not survive when they are cut off from the roots, we cannot survive spiritually if we cut ourselves off from Jesus.
There are many temptations that try to get us away from our Lord. We must avoid sin and unbelief and remain closely connected to our Savior.
If we ignore opportunities to study God's Word and grow closer to Jesus, we are telling our one source of spiritual strength that we don't need Him. If we do not gather with other Christians for worship and if we neglect our daily prayers, we are separating ourselves from our Lord.
Jesus gave us a beautiful promise when He said, “Remain in me, and I will remain in you.” Jesus, who loves us enough to die for us, also loves us enough to stay with us and guide us.
Now God, like a loving gardener, carefully tends and cultivates each of us.
As we trust God’s pruning and trimming in our lives, He grants us faith and gives us opportunities to serve Him each day.
