Members of the American Legion Auxiliary are pleased to announce the winners of their recent Americanism essay contest. Students received congratulatory certificates and cash prizes for their efforts.

Brandon Chao, a fifth grade student in Mrs. Coward’s classroom at Cummings Valley School, wrote the winning essay in the group one competition (grades four, five and six). This first-place composition entitled “Why We Pledge Allegiance to the Flag,” caught the spirit of American freedom with Brandon’s heart-warming reference to his Cambodian ancestors who had not been able to enjoy the freedom as he, an 11 year old American citizen, does. His essay has been entered in the district competition where it will be judged with compositions from students of other schools. Brandon is the son of Jennifer and Heng Chao of Tehachapi.

Brittany Roach, a fifth grade student in Miss Theotig’s class at Cummings Valley School, displayed her talent for writing by capturing second place for a fine, informative essay. Third place was awarded Dakotah Curnow, a fourth grade student from Tompkins Elementary. She is a student in Mr. Parrott’s class.

Group two competition (grades seven and eight), found Jacobsen Middle School student Katie Chung as first-place winner for her essay entitled “How I Would Increase Patriotism in America.” Besides exhibiting her talent for writing, Katie enjoys swimming and pursuing her love of music by playing the piano. She is a student in Mrs. Abel’s social studies class and is the daughter of Hannah and Jinwon Chung. Katie’s essay was also forwarded into the district competition.
Second place winner in the group two competition was Sophia Barraclough, also a student in Mrs. Abel’s class.

In the group four competition (children with exceptional needs), Laura Perez was awarded first place for her essay “Why I am Proud to be an American.” Laura attends Golden Hills Elementary School, in Mrs. Ruziecki’s class. She wrote of her appreciation of the freedom of speech that we are allowed as Americans. Laura’s essay is also being judged in the district competition.

Second place winner in the group four competition was Tyler Christy, a fourth grade student in Mrs. Ruziecki’s class. Third place was awarded to Kailey Cornell of Cummings Valley School, a student of Mrs. Pinckard.

Many well-deserved honorable mention awards were given to students in Tompkins, Cummings Valley and Golden Hills Elementary schools.

Members of the Auxiliary extend their heartfelt appreciation for the time and effort expended by both teachers and students in the preparation and writing of the essays. In promoting the Americanism essay competition, the auxiliary emphasizes the importance of American history and its traditions while instilling in the students a sense of personal obligation to accept an active part in the duties and responsibilities of American citizenship.
