Tehachapi artist Lyn Bennett has been chosen to paint the fifth historical mural in downtown Tehachapi.
Located on the west side of the Moose Lodge, the mural will depict the Red Front Blacksmith Shop, which was located across Curry Street where the phone company building is now. Additional scenes will show interior views of a blacksmith shop, and local cowboys.
Bennett’s winning design for the mural is a collage design, based on old photographs from Tehachapi’s ranching past. For authenticity, she visited the working blacksmith shop of Jon Hammond at the Linda Vista Ranch, in Tehachapi.
Work on the mural will start at the beginning of June and it will take about six weeks to complete.
A section of the mural will show depictions of the actual cattle brands used at several local ranches and the names of the owners who used them. The brands were chosen by the artist, with the help of local historian Del Troy. They show the artistic range incorporated by local blacksmiths into this important implement of Tehachapi’s cattle-ranching past.
Bennett participated in the painting of the “T-Hacha-P” Mural in a Day project last year, as well as winning the “Best Of Show” award in the mini-mural challenge held at the Tehachapi Art Center.
The 2006 Mini-Mural Challenge is scheduled for June. Details are available at the Tehachapi Art Center, 822-6794.
The event is a fundraiser for the Main Street Murals Committee. Participants will be given a 4 by 8 foot panel on which to create a mural depicting their choice of subject matter and cash prizes will be awarded to the winners.
Bennett has lived in Tehachapi for 14 years with her husband Mark and three children.
“I have been painting murals, furniture, and anything else paintable for 8 years,” she said. Bennet majored in ornamental horticulture with a minor in irrigation at Cal Poly, Pomona, and continues to create landscape designs for clients.

Individual golfers and foursomes can register now for the tournament, which includes lunch, raffle prizes for all golfers and cash prizes to the first and second place winners.
The mural dedication ceremony will be held in July with old time music and a barbecue dinner hosted by the Moose Lodge.
