In a race, there is an old saying that it is much more difficult to maintain a lead than it is to acquire one. However, for Tehachapi High School, maintaining its South Sequoia League lead doesn’t seem to be a problem after taking down Shafter in a pair of games 10-2 and 10-7 and Wasco 17-8 in last week.

Against Shafter, the Warriors (12-6; 9-1 SSL) received a scare when the Generals opened up the top of the first inning with four runs scored. The Generals went on to build a 7-3 lead at the midway point in the fifth before the Tehachapi bats gave the Warriors the tie at the start of the sixth inning, 7-7. Matt Rombouts, Bennie Dunn and Nathan McKinnon all scored in the bottom of the sixth to give Mountain Baseball the game clinching 10-7 win.

For the game, Matt Fort went two for three with a home run and three RBIs, and Nathan McKinnon went one for two with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored. Dunn also logged in two triples along with a two for three plate appearance.

Against Wasco, the Warriors again succumbed to an early deficit when the Tigers scored six runs at the top of the first to take a quick 6-0 lead. Tehachapi answered in kind in the third inning with an eight-run explosion, led off by Jacob Rombouts’ lead-off home run. The Warriors went on to tally another multi-run inning in the sixth, scoring six runs to help total the eventual 17-8 victory.

Jacob Rombouts went three for four in the game with two home runs, four RBIs and a double, Matt Halpin went yard as well, logging in a home run of his own at the bottom of the sixth inning. EJ Muro went three for four in the game with two doubles, Matt Fort two for three with three RBIs, and Michael Dunwoody two for five with an RBI to his credit.

In the final game of the week, Tehachapi squared off against Shafter for the final time on the year, taking the season series 3-0 with a convincing 10-2 win. EJ Muro led the charge with three doubles and two RBIs, while Nathan McKinnon, Michael Dunwoody and Matt Rombouts all logged in doubles as well. McKinnon also homered in the game, bringing his season total to four, best in the SSL.

Tehachapi will have three games against Golden Valley this week, two of them away games on Friday and Monday. The Warriors will also face off against the Bulldogs at home on Tuesday. All games are set to start at 4 p.m.
