Tehachapi can clinch the South Sequoia League title with two wins this week.
Just as forceful and confident as Wyatt Earp breezing through main street towards the OK Corral in western lore, the Lady Warriors have made their presence felt with softball this season.
Tehachapi (11-3-1; 6-0 SSL) has supplanted themselves as the new sheriffs in the South Sequoia League after taking down two of the area’s most prominent programs, Wasco 17-4 and Taft 2-1.
“Coming into this week we stressed the point of one play at a time, one hit at a time and one game at a time,” said head coach Tracy Goodell. “We had two very tough opponents this week and we are very happy to come out with two wins.”
Against Wasco, Tehachapi was able to adjust to the Tigers off-speed pitching with a six-run second inning and a combined nine-run fifth and sixth inning to blow the game out. Lindsay Romo went three for four in the contest with a home run, six RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Warriors. Kayla Kapitzke also logged in a home run while also contributing with a two for four plate performance. Dana Liebengood and Michelle Baxter both recorded doubles.
In a rematch of Tehachapi’s early season 2-1 victory over Taft, the result on the scoreboard was equaled in the second go-around with the Warriors again taking a 2-1 decision to assume a two-game lead in the SSL title race.
“Taft was an awesome opponent and it could have gone either way,” Goodell added. “(Friday) it went our way and we are thrilled.”
While it would be hard to match the first meeting with Taft and its late-inning heroics, Tehachapi made a go at another memorable duel with their rival in a nine-inning thriller that was capped on a Kasie Muro double in the top of the ninth to bring home the winning run. Muro finished the game three for four with an RBI and a double. Caitlyn Seigmund and Scarlett Dunn both scored runs for Tehachapi.
For the year, Muro leads the team with a .444 batting average while also tallying 12 RBIs, and Lindsay Romo and Kayla Kapitzke are tied for the league lead in home runs with three. Romo is also third in the SSL with 17 RBIs.
“Teamwork from both the players and the coaching staff are to be commended,” Goodell said. “Just like we’ve been doing, we need to keep it going, one play at a time, one hit at a time, and one game at a time.”
The Warriors will have a home game against Golden Valley on Tuesday and an away contest against Arvin on Thursday. Both games will start at 4 p.m.
