The Tehachapi junior varsity baseball team defeated Shafter 16-1 and 12-3 last week to help catapult them into a South Sequoia League first place tie with Taft with two weeks remaining in the season.
The Braves (11-6; 7-3 SSL) came out firing on all cylinders against Shafter last Tuesday, taking a 4-0 lead through three innings and then blowing the game out of reach with an eight-run fifth inning, eventually winning by a 16-1 count. Leading batters for Tehachapi included Franky Rodriguez, who went five for five with two RBIs, three runs scored and three triples. Vince Trevino went three for five with two runs scored and a triple, while Jeff Waldram went three for five with two RBIs and a run scored.
“We had a really strong week against Shafter,” said head coach Craig Waldram. “When you look at our scores, we usually take our wins by pretty big margins and we’ve been doing that consistently in league this year.”
On Wednesday, the Braves dropped a close 9-7 decision to Wasco to record their third league loss on the season, but then bounced back last Friday against Shafter, tallying a 12-3 win with Johnny Holguin, Jeff Waldram, Chris Rickheim, Franky Rodriguez, Ryan Rush, Dominic Chavarria, Steve Miller, Vince Trevino, and Matt Rush all crossing the plate.
Franky Rodriguez leads the team in batting averages on the year with .595, along with 12 RBIs. Helping out Rodriguez at the plate has been Johnny Holguin, who has a .419 average with seven RBIs and Jeff Waldram, who is batting .414 with seven RBIs.
Heading into Friday, both Taft and Wasco were tied with Tehachapi with three league losses each.
“Based on opponents left to be played compared to Taft and Wasco, I think we’re in a good position,” said Waldram. “Taft and Wasco played each other last Friday, plus Taft has a lot of make-up games to do because of the weather, so I think we will be in good shape if we can just keep winning.”
Tehachapi will face off against Golden Valley in three games this week on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. The Monday and Friday games will be away, with the Tuesday match-up set to be a home contest. All three games will start at 4 p.m.
