April 29 was opening day for hatchery-released trout at Brite Lake. Fishermen began casting their lines into all corners of the lake.
"There were plenty of people going out for opening day," said Craig Myers, a Bakersfield resident who waited in line a day for gates to open.
It seems a whole lot of out of towners headed out to play, said Myers, who took his 3-year-old son Jimmy out to the lake.
"We'll catch and eat them," said Myers, who usually takes fish orders for his friends and family for the occasion.
"I don't really care to eat them myself," he said. "I have more fun catching them."
Other fisherman expressed similar thoughts, but plenty of families were seen barbecuing fish in the evening hours.
John Nole, a new Tehachapi resident, says that he prefers to eat what he catches.
"My wife does a fantastic job of grilling fish and kids get a big bang out of it," said Nole.
Some anglers expressed thoughts about sport fishing.
"To me, part of the deal with the fish is that you might outsmart them and the fish fall for it," said Tom Ball, a resident of Palmdale.
Tehachapi Parks and Recreation Department stocked Brite Lake with approximate 5,000 pounds of trout. The lake opened at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and a line to enter extended almost a mile down Banducci Road. Fish were free though a fishing license was required. The trout averaged 10 inches in length and many exceeded 14 inches.
Power bait from a jar and an old fashion worm on hook were the most popular bait in use. Many anglers could be seen pulling fish within 30 minutes of dropping their lines into the lake.
James Wittword, an experienced fisherman, said those hatchery fish are very hungry and you can use simple bait to attract them.
A few fishermen were more sophisticated and launched small electric powered boats. However, most of the fish pulled from the lake were caught from the shoreline.
Some people said that they come to Brite Lake because the price is affordable.
Jane Mazzo, a Tehachapi resident, said that camping for $20 is a bargain and kids enjoy running around the park.
Whether the anglers are admiring the fish or cooking them they were out in large numbers tossing lines in the lake.
