Last year, more than $30,000 in Woodward West scholarships was awarded to kids in inline, skateboarding and BMX freestyle. This year, Woodward West hopes to provide more opportunities to financially needy kids, who otherwise would not have the opportunity to come to camp.
“The scholarship program is an outreach effort,” Woodward West Camp Director Debbie Williams said. “We are excited to provide the Woodward West experience to kids, who may otherwise not have an opportunity to come to summer camp.”
Applicants of all ages, skill levels and achievement are considered. Applicants are encouraged to demonstrate their love of the sport, how they believe camp attendance will help them achieve their goals, and their efforts to earn and/or save money for camp.
“The overall program has been an experience in personal development for Caedyn. We urged Caedyn to earn a part of his own money. Just like college, there are people to help you toward your dream and vision,” said Stephen Curto, father of 11 year old Caedyn Curto. “Caedyn was able to ride 10 hours a day with skaters of all levels and counselors who provided hands-on training and demos. He was able to learn more complicated tricks and now can hone his skills throughout the year.”
Caedyn, who has been skating for seven years and competing for five years, is a member of California Amateur Skateboard League, and recently competed in the Woodward/PlayStation Big Hook-Up Tour.
“Last summer, I learned a kickflip board slide. I just asked the counselors and learned a whole bunch of new tricks,” Caedyn said. “I’m looking forward to learning new stuff and just having fun. I loved all the counselors. They were all really nice and really cool.”
Woodward camp owners and former gymnasts assist aspiring athletes in pursuing their goals at Woodward West by donating scholarship funds. Awards are offered in $100, $200, $300, $400, and full amounts. In addition, Woodward provides parents and children alternative options to subsidize camp fees, such as working in exchange for all or partial tuition.
“Our goal is to offer as many kids as possible an opportunity to come, ride and have fun at Woodward West,” Williams said. “At the same time, the scholarship foundation gives former athletes the opportunity to give back to the action sports community, while expanding their sport at the grassroots level and ensuring outstanding opportunities are available to all kids, regardless of their financial situation.”
