When Tehachapi began the 2006 season, it had the distinction of being the only team in the central section to ever homer seven times in one game.

Two Kern County teams tied that mark this year, but the Warriors have shattered the record again, belting out eight home runs in one game in last Tuesday’s win over Golden Valley in South Sequoia League action. Mountain Baseball (14-7; 11-2 SSL) went 2-1 this week against the Bulldogs, winning two contests 9-6 and 25-6, and losing an extra inning game 3-2.

The Warriors lost a tense nine-inning defensive battle with Golden Valley last Friday afternoon, with both teams knotted up at 1-1 after seven innings of play. Tehachapi scored a run at the top of the eighth to take a 2-1 lead, but the Bulldogs answered in the bottom of the eighth with a run of their own and another score in the bottom of the ninth to take the win.

Despite the defeat, the tough loss was not overshadowed by the stellar performances by Tehachapi in the week’s other two games. In the other match-ups, Tehachapi blasted the Bulldogs for 33 hits, 27 RBIs and 34 runs scored, along with breaking their own single-game CIF Central Section home run record with eight long-bombs in one game.

Helping contribute to the new record last Tuesday included Matt Fort and Jacob Rombouts with two home runs apiece, and Matt Halpin, JJ Holguin, Nathan McKinnon and EJ Muro with a home run each. In addition to the record, Tehachapi also had a run scored by all 13 members of the team, and a 15-run inning, two feats unmatched by any other team in the county this year.

For the season, Jacob Rombouts leads the team with a .419 batting average and leads the league with six home runs and 27 RBIs. Other standouts include EJ Muro with a .391 average, four home runs, 24 RBIs and 11 doubles, Nathan McKinnon with a .391 average with three homeruns and 15 RBIs, and Matt Fort with a .357 average with four home runs and 14 RBIs. Bennie Dunn leads the team in triples with four.

On the mound, JJ Holguin leads the league with 60 strikeouts and an earned run average of 1.490, while Nathan McKinnon has retired 24 batters at the plate along with amassing an earned run average of 2.100.

Tehachapi has a one-game lead in the race for the SSL title, with Taft hot on its heels with a 9-3 SSL record. Tehachapi can win the title outright with two victories against Arvin this week. The first game will be at Arvin on Tuesday and the second contest will be Thursday at home. Both games will start at 4 p.m.
