Every year, the 2006 annual Los Angeles Flag Football Tournament serves as a barometer of some of the finest football athletes across California. For the teams that are fortunate to win their preliminary pool, they are given the opportunity to play in the championship game at the Staples Center, the same arena that the Los Angeles Lakers, Clippers and Kings play.

In the 12- to 14-year-old division, Tehachapi was one of those teams this season, winning their bracket with a 3-1 record to set a date with Team-Pasadena in the Flag Football Championship last Saturday.

While the score at the end of the contest showed Pasadena winning the title 20-6, the future seems to be very bright for the young Tehachapi athletes who participated, all of whom are set to participate in high school football this coming fall.
“This game was the crown jewel,” said head coach Jody Dalmas. “You had to go through some very tough competition to get to the championship game, and to get there, playing in the Staples Center, you just can’t top that.”

Tehachapi played four games at Balboa Park in San Bernardino to clinch its berth in the title game, taking down Glendale 35-7, Orange County 28-14, and San Diego 26-6. There were a total of 52 teams that played in the tournament overall.

“The flag football tournament is a great opportunity for skilled positioned players to hone their skills in the off-season,” said tournament director Jennifer Scharzvack. “We are honored to host the tournament for some of the best talent in California, it’s a great way for a lot of the players to get noticed early.”

The scoring was standard flag-football format, a running 15-minute clock in two periods with a two-minute halftime.

In the game itself, Tehachapi succumbed to an early 14-0 deficit, but fought back to score a touchdown in the second half. The score came when quarterback Ryan Dalmas found a wide-open Austin Herman in the flat for a 35-yard touchdown with 6:35 remaining in the game. Dalmas finished the game with six completions for 97 yards, hitting Herman for two catches for 54 yards, Jessie Olofson on two catches for 29 yards and John Cramer with two catches for 14 yards.

“We made a lot of adjustments in the game, but in the end they came out on top,” added Dalmas. “I take nothing away from Pasadena or our guys, it was a great game and just a great experience.”
