Tehachapi Community Theatre is proud to present Ernest Thompson’s “On Golden Pond,” directed by Jackie Lawlor and Elias Garcia. Both new to the directors chair, the pair have worked hard on reviving this beloved play that TCT produced over a decade ago.

"It’s daunting" said Lawlor "audiences love the movie version with late greats Henry Fonda and Katherine Hepburn. That’s a lot to live up to! But we have a great script and a fantastic cast to work with and I'm sure our audiences will appreciate it."

On Golden Pond is the love story of Ethel and Norman Thayer, who are returning to their summer home on Golden Pond for their forty-fourth year. Norman is a retired professor, nearing eighty, with heart palpitations and a failing memory, but still as tart-tongued, observant and eager for life as ever. Ethel, 10 years younger and the perfect foil for Norman, delights in all the small things that have enriched and continue to enrich their long life together.

The couple are visited by their divorced, middle-aged daughter, Chelsea Wayne and her dentist fiance, Bill Ray, who then go off to Europe, leaving his teenage son, Billy, behind for the summer. Billy Ray quickly becomes the "grandchild" the elderly couple never had and as Norman revels in taking his ward fishing and thrusting good books at him, he also learns some lessons about modern teenage awareness and slang in return.

In the end, as the summer wanes, so does their brief idyll, and in the final, deeply moving moments of the play, Norman and Ethel are brought even closer together, the years have been good and perhaps, another summer on Golden Pond still awaits them.

The casting in this production is perfect, portraying Ethel and Norman are Joy Gray and Royce Cox, both veteran actors on the TCT stage that have delighted audiences for many years. Chelsea and Bill bring back another pair of fine actors, Patricia Hunter and Steven Kirby, once pitted against each other in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” here they are cast as soul mates.

Chris Jones, a sophomore at THS will portray the precocious Billy Ray. Jones has many Y.E.S. productions under his belt and this is his third play with TCT.

Making his debut with TCT is Eric Leiss as Charlie the lovable mail carrier.

Dates for this production are May 19, 20, 26, 27, June 2 and 3. Doors open at 7:15 p.m. with a showtime of 7:45 p.m. at Tehachapi Academy of Performing Arts, located at 47881 Valley Blvd. (between Tucker Rd. & Mountain View).
