To a group of screaming high school students and supporters large enough to fill up one quarter of the Atlanta Falcon’s Georgia Dome football stadium, add 344 robots of every imaginable size and color. Devise a challenging game for them all to play. Add a large dose of enthusiasm. Mix thoroughly for three days. The result is a fantastic time and an educational experience that can’t be beat.

This is what Tehachapi High School Robotics Team 585 experienced the last weekend in April.

After six grueling and challenging weeks of brainstorming, design, construction and testing, Team 585 boxed up their robot and sent it first to a regional competition in Las Vegas Nevada and then to the national championships in Atlanta, Ga.

The Las Vegas Regional was held at the Thomas and Mack Arena on the campus of University of Nevada Las Vegas. After nine rounds of competition the team finished ninth out of 44 teams at the regional competition and were able to select teams for their own alliance in the finals.

After hard-fought rounds in the finals they were eliminated in the quarter-finals. At the nationals, after the qualifying rounds, Team 585 was selected for one of eight alliances for the finals on the Archimedes field.

The alliance swept the quarter-finals and was eventually eliminated in the third semi-finals match by a five point margin by the alliance that eventually became the national champions.

Only 24 of the 344 teams in attendance advanced further than our own Tehachapi High team.

The excitement was overwhelming and if one closed one’s eyes, it wasn’t a far reach to imagine that it was the Atlanta Falcons on the field rather than high school student manufactured robots.

If you are interested in joining the team or becoming a supporter of the robotics program at THS, call Randall Jackson at the high school.
