New officers for Omicron Iota chapter of Beta Sigma Phi were installed for the 2006-2007 chapter year on May 16. Outgoing president, Olene Shannon, conducted the ceremony.
New officers are Fran Hughey as president; Ivy Lambert as vice president; Pauline Molidor as secretary; and Arlene Weed as treasurer. They all assumed their new duties after installation.
A noon luncheon in Carolyn Thurman’s new home preceded the meeting.
Arlene Weed presented a program on Victorian dolls. She showed two dolls from her collection and noted characteristics of the era: long hair done in curls; dresses of rich fabrics such as velvet; lots of lace and ruffles; and high-topped shoes.
Weed noted that France, Germany and Switzerland were longtime leaders in doll making. Even after the United States began commercial doll manufacturing in the 1860s, heads were still imported from Europe.
Fran Dudley reported on the trip to take gift bags to and visit with residents of the Barstow Veterans Home.
Dudley had explored several possibilities for a service project for the coming year, which she presented. The group voted to assist with the Salvation Army’s back to school project in August. A gift of $250 was also donated to the Kern County Alliance against family violence.
Kathy Williams told of plans for a progressive dinner for members and their husbands on June 3. It will be a Hawaiian luau prepared in various Bear Valley homes.
The last meeting of the current program year will be on June 16 when secret sisters will be revealed.
Beta Sigma Phi, the worlds largest Greek letter sorority, is a cultural, social and service organization. Membership is only by invitation. Women who are interested may call Arlene Weed at 821-788.
