Daniel Ward and I set off from Mojave at 6:30 in the morning for our leadership camp. The trip to Ojai was long, but gave us the opportunity to make some friendships. By the time we arrived at camp, the six of us were good friends.
Not even a moment after we got there we were still making friends. The students that were selected from other Rotary Clubs all had several qualities in common. Since everyone was so outgoing and open, I made better friends with 200 people in two hours than I have in three years.
While we were there we had several motivational speakers that everyone would benefit from. Then we used those ideas in exercises and challenges. Our different teams grew from groups of people to a family.
Every day we would have the best food and the most awesome orange juice. We had fellowships every day, also, from rock climbing and laser tag to dances and a talent show.
I could go on for pages writing about Camp Ryla and how beneficial is was, but that won't do. I only recommend you join your local Rotary or Interact Club. If you do and you're serious about it, you might be next!
Editor's Note: From March 30 through April 2, two THS students attended a Rotary Club-sponsored leadership camp, called Ryla, in Ojai. Sponsored by the Tehachapi Rotary Club, Daniel Ward and Chris Hutto spent their time making new friends and learning leadership skills. Both Daniel and Chris are members of the Interact Club, which is sponsored by Rotary. They traveled to Ojai with other teens from East Kern County. Chris was asked to write an essay about his time there.
