Thirteen talented young people competed in the second annual Carden School of Tehachapi Fiddle Competition Friday, May 26.
“All students, fourth through eighth grade, are required to learn to play a string instrument; this is part of our curriculum. Gayel Pitchford is our conductor and students play in a string orchestra and many compete in the fiddle competition,” said school director Betty Gubler.
Students entering the competition were Erica Solum, Dylan Patton, Ren Koga, Vanessa Brock, James Solum, Luke Stone, Chase Bowen, Zachary Clark, Eric Alvarado, Allen Michael Adams, Kate Judy, Brianna Kohner and Julie Fuller.
Each contestant played three pieces: a hoedown, a waltz and a piece of their own choosing. Judging was based upon the “Old Time Fiddle Contest Standards.” Contestants were given four minutes to perform the medley of tunes.
Judges Jo Stone, Phyllis Belcher and Suzanne Botha were seated behind a screen, unable to see the students. Students were assigned numbers and judged on the degree of difficulty, rhythm, intonation and old time style.
“Some of the kids have been playing only a few months. It’s amazing how well they play,” Belcher said.
“These kids are learning so fast and many of them will be competing in Fiddling Down The Tracks in September,” Pitchford said.
Pitchford will be be holding a string summer camp at Carden School July 17 to July 22. Call Pitchford at 821-7511 for more information.
