Bear sightings happen occasionally in the Tehachapi area, especially in Sand Canyon and all over Cummings Valley. But now you can see a variety of creatively decorated bears all over downtown Tehachapi.
The Tehachapi Art Center, located at 106 S. Mojave, is sponsoring the city-wide Festival of the Bears, which is going on right now. All you have to do to see the bears in town is know where to look for them.
You’ll find some bears on display at Tehachapi Art Center (decorated by folks who live outside the downtown area), where you can also pick up a map to find the other bears in town. You can get a ballot to vote for your favorite to determine the people’s choice award.
You’ll find a bunch of bears at Jake’s Steak House, on Curry and at the Loop office on F Street. More bears are hanging around in the windows of Five Heart Quilts (on Tehachapi Boulevard) and Gallery ‘n’ Gifts and CrossRoads Gallery, catty-corner from each other on the corner of Green and Tehachapi Boulevard.
A few late entries may be added after this article goes to press, so keep your eyes open all over town.
Prizes will be awarded for the best of show, best Tehachapi bear, best business promotion bear, best use of humor and people’s choice at a ceremony at Tehachapi Art Center on Sunday, June 4 at noon, which also coincides with the Center’s monthly Peddler’s Faire.
