A dozen volunteers worked tirelessly last Saturday morning retrieving 201 tires from a Sand Canyon ravine. The volunteers, members of the Sand Canyon Volunteer Fire Department, 2nd District Supervisor Don Maben and staff members David Reed and Mary Beth Garrison, pulled out the passenger and truck vehicle tires to not only beautify the area but to remove potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes, carriers of the West Nile virus.

“The tires were filled with water and mud left over from the flash rainstorm just two days before,” cited Maben. “It is imperative that we get rid of the tires to combat West Nile and beautify a public area many residents enjoy.” The location of the tires was off the beaten path and up a dirt road incline on BLM property.

David Reed, 2nd District special projects assistant, was originally contacted about the dump site. After thorough investigation, it was determined that the mess was the result of a commercial enterprise illegally disposing of residual tires. County staff, with the help of the eyes and ears of local residents, will continue the investigation.

Reed, as a part of the 2nd District’s commitment to illegal dumping eradication, could have removed the nuisance tires alone — taking several days and several trips to the landfill. The community effort allowed for swift removal.

“The help of the SCVFD members made the task much easier. We had the tires loaded in under two hours. If I had acted alone, the job would have taken several days,” said Reed.

The tires were taken to the Tehachapi Landfill where they will be loaded into a semi-truck trailer and shipped to a tire recycler up north. The recycler will remove the steel belts, clean and grind the tires into rubberized bark and mats for use in play areas and gardens.

“At the end of the day, the project illustrates what people working together can accomplish for the good of us all,” said Maben.
