At a recent district meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary in Bakersfield, it was announced that the winners of the Tehachapi competition in the Americanism essay contest have once again been chosen and awarded first place in the district competition.
Katie Chung, a popular eighth grade student at Jacobsen Middle School, was awarded a certificate pf participation and a cash prize for her essay, “How I Would Increase Patriotism in America.” Her composition has been forwarded to the state competition. Katie is a student in Mrs. Abel’s class.
Another first place winner was Laura Perez, a student in Mrs. Ruziecki’s class at Golden Hills Elementary. Laura was presented with a certificate of merit and a cash prize. Her essay, “Why I am Proud to be an American,” has also been sent to district competition.
Brandon Chao, a fifth-grade student in Mrs. Coward’s class at Tompkins Elementary, won second place for his essay, “Why We Pledge Allegiance to the Flag,” which caught the spirit of American freedom.
Members of the Auxiliary are very proud of these dedicated students and extend a hearty congratulations for their fine efforts.
