This year the Tehachapi Unified School District WorkAbility 1 program, in conjunction with the Workforce Investment Act (WIA), placed over 75 students in job experiences in the Tehachapi community. These businesses provided work placements for students: ACE Hardware; Any Time Fitness; Avalon Spa; Canine Creek; Dollar Tree; Farmers Insurance; The Feed Store; Kmart; Hemme Hay; Woodford Tehachapi Road Horse Ranch; McDonalds; Mirabella’s Beauty Salon; Mountain Garden Nursery; Mountain Paint and Supply; Sears; Old Town Pizza; Picture Perfect; Pioneer Hardware; Taco Samich; TEC Computer; Tehachapi Hot Rydes; Tejon Ranch; and the TUSD Bus Barn. The students have learned many valuable skills, such as work ethics and the importance of being on time.
The TUSD WorkAbility 1 program and WIA would also like to thank our guest speakers who took time out of their busy schedules to share their interesting career fields with our students: Bill Brewer and Bill Turney of Lehigh Southwest; Leo Mercy Geologist; Susie Atherton of Canine Creek Dog Wash and Boutique; and Sergeant Pittack US Marines.
Thanks is also extended to our community businesses, which welcomed our students into their place of business to further share and inform students about their chosen career fields: Tehachapi Hot Rydes; Managhan Motorsports; Merle Norman; and Hitchingpost Theaters.
Thanks to businesses and colleges who graciously allowed us to visit and experience a piece of their world: Lehigh Southwest, Woodward West, Bakersfield College, Antelope Valley College, John’s Incredible Pizza and Hitchingpost Theaters.
A big thanks from WorkAbility and WIA is extended to the students, parents, teachers and TUSD administration who helped make our school year so successful.
