Flags, flowers and freedom were the highlights of last week’s Memorial Day observance in Tehachapi.
The graves of veterans decorated with flags and poppies were a quiet reminder of what the day represented.
A public observance held in Central Park in the morning was sponsored by the VFW, VFW Auxiliary, American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary.
Bonnie Gladden, president of the VFW Auxiliary, and members of the auxiliary spearheaded the event and arranged for the local Boy Scout troops to give arriving guests a small American flag and a program.
The singing of the national anthem was led by Tracy Barns and the invocation was led by Father Wes Clair, National Guard chaplain.
An address by Mayor Ed Grimes added to the patriotic spirit of the ceremony. He reminded those in attendance of the sacrifices of many veterans that make it possible for each individual to be recognized “without religious or political oppression.”
The event included a rendition of “Amazing Grace” played by piper James Carmichael, followed by a three-gun salute and taps played by Richard Oldenberg.
Later that morning, Carmichael was observed playing is bagpipe for those veterans interned at Tehachapi’s Westside Ceremony.
