Tillman Richard (Dr. Dick) Periman was born to Tillman Carpenter and Vera Periman on Feb. 24, 1936 at McPhee, Colo., a small logging community in the Four Corners area of the high Rocky Mountains. His childhood consisted of hiking hills, discovering arrowheads, riding horses on the farm and watching Indians perform at the Spanish Trails Fiestas in Durango.

While still a youngster, his family moved to Boise, Idaho, where he honed his skills of facing life’s challenges. During his school days, he pursued a few innovative jobs: elevator boy in a local hotel, a paper delivery boy and beehive preparer, just to name a few. While he was in high school, his parents moved to Bakersfield, where he graduated.

After much thought, he enlisted in the Army and was sent to Germany with a communications division. He later became a ski instructor at Alta, Utah, Mammoth and June Mountains in California.

To support his family, he became a successful real estate agent while serving the Kern County Fire Department. In 1975, he retired as a captain from the Minter Field Station. He returned to school, graduated and passed the state board and put out a shingle as a practicing chiropractor.

Many years later, after developing a successful practice, Dr. Dick again retired and moved to Tehachapi, a place he dearly loved.
Dr. Dick is survived by his wife, Sally; daughters, Karen Rickabus of Laguna Beach and Dorie Wells of Fresno; stepchildren, Robert Campbell and Katie Campbell of Bakersfield; his mother, Vera; sister, Connie Bell (Frank) Burrows; nephews, Russ (Cindy) Bell and Randy Bell, great nephews, Ian and Conner Bell; granddaughter, Serina; numerous cousins and great-aunt, Fay. His father, Till, was waiting for him on the other side.

A celebration of life will be held at the Tehachapi Mountain Bible Church on June 10 at 11 a.m., located at 630 Maple St. (corner of Maple View and Mt. View). Lunch will be served immediately following the memorial service. Burial will be a private, family ceremony earlier in the day. In lieu of flowers, make donations in Dr. Dick’s name to Mountain Bible Church “Tehachapi in his Time.”
