Wisdom of the week:”We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures that we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.”
— Jawaharla Nehru

Dear C.C.: We’ve just spent time with friends who have recently retired. Instead of being happy, they sit around and complain about living on a set income. Is this what we have to look forward to in a couple of years?

Dear Friend: Absolutely not, but it does depend on you and your husband’s attitude, which, by the way, is everything. Get connected to those retirees who say it’s the best time of their entire life. How you see the world is how it will be. Start now to find things that will keep you so busy that you won’t know how you found time to work before.

Dear C.C.: Now that our son is 4 years old, I want him to learn how to swim. When my husband was a kid he nearly drowned and ever since has had a fear of any body of water larger than a bathtub. I’ve acquiesced to his fear of water; we’ve never vacationed near water. But now I feel our son should learn how to swim. Am I wrong to insist that he learn?

Dear Mom: If you read the paper, you’ll be aware of those who drown in our Kern River. Learning how to respect water is quite different than being afraid of it. Locate a teacher or program to teach your son how to swim. Then possibly he can help your husband look at his fear realistically. How about sending him to the same teacher?

Dear C.C.: Summer is here and, oh dear, the arguments have already started. We do a lot of entertaining and most of it is backyard barbecuing. My husband thinks that barbecuing means standing around the grill, drinking beer and leaving the girls to ourselves. In the past he and I have had several discussions about this but the situation doesn’t seem to change. How do I convince him to be somewhat of a host and include everyone?

Dear Left Alone: Depending upon what’s cooking and how good your husband is at the grill, you may be happy that he stays close to it until the food is ready to eat. Keep in mind that men really don’t have a lot of bonding time and they need it. Try not to require him to change because it will tend to make you feel lousy. Find a way to get everyone together to eat and be such a fun person to be with that they won’t want to miss the chance to share your company. You might ask your girl friends to come in bikinis and see if that makes a difference.
