On June 12, The Tehachapi Republican Women, Federated honored four outstanding young women for their winning essays titled, “America the Free Because of the Brave.”
Jessica Hefley and Emily Walter are each the recipients of a $500 scholarship. Sara Morris and Jesika Kenney are recipients of a $250 scholarship.
A total of six entries competed for the scholarships. Each young lady described how her chosen vocation would contribute towards a better America. Each of the applicants impressed the scholarship committee.
Applicants were required to describe their career objectives and outline how they plan to accomplish those goals. The TRWF is honored to contribute to the success of each scholarship recipient.
Jessica Hefley outlined her goals to become a constitutional lawyer focusing on the rights of children.
Emily Walter focused on her dream to become an administrative assistant and to work in the White House. Emily has attended Republican Student Day in Sacrament, and she has been and active volunteer, working at the organization’s Tehachapi July 4 Festival hot dog booth. Walter plans to attend college as a political science major.
Sara Morris was very specific in her plans to become a teacher. She feels she can instill values and ideals concerning good government through education. Sara plans to encouraged her students to pass on those ideals to parents and friends.
Jessica Kenney is runner up with her essay on patriotism. Her essay was very original and thought provoking.
Judith Reedy, chairperson for the scholarship committee, and TRWF member Mary Williams are the two people who have helped make this scholarship possible. They were instrumental in promoting “A Day Out of the Kitchen,” a fundraising effort that enlisted civic-minded businesses to contribute.
A breakfast, lunch and dinner for two will be provided by these restaurants: Breakfasts will be at the Apple Shed and Gracean Grill. Lunch will be at Idy’s and Kelsey’s and dinner will be at Cattlemen’s and Jake’s Steak House.
We are indebted to these providers. There will be two winners for the “Day Out of the Kitchen” event.
The scholarship committee included Judith Reedy, Mary Williams, Laurie Hamilton and La Nelle Thompson.
