The Tehachapi Community Orchestra's Mother’s Day concert, held on May 14, was a real prize winner. Under the direction of Dr. David Newby, the orchestra performed Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. Cecilia Lay, winner of our 2006 Young Artist Competition was the featured violin soloist and received a $500 scholarship.

The grand prize winner of the annual raffle fundraiser was Grace Roberts, a member of the orchestra board. She was delighted to hand over the $1,000 winnings to the K-Club, knowing how much the orchestra depends upon the K-Club for support.

Phyllis Comstock won the opportunity to direct a tune or two at the July 4 concert under the stars at Coy Burnett Football Stadium. That evening the audience will be treated to a pops menu of marches, patriotic songs, show tunes as well as movie and light classical pieces. The program will culminate at 9 p.m. with the annual Tehachapi fireworks show, so pack a picnic basket and join the orchestra in a glorious Fourth of July celebration.

In keeping with the orchestra’s commitment to provide live classical music to everyone in the area, admission to the July 4 concert is free. This is made possible by musicians who volunteer their time and talent and by donations from all segments of the Tehachapi community.
