Residents and small businesses considering installing small wind and solar energy systems are running out of time to reserve generous California Energy Commission incentive rebates scheduled to end June 30.
The Emerging Renewables Program provides rebates to consumers who install qualifying renewable energy systems on their property. Financial incentive may vary according to the system size, technology, and installation method.
“Those who contract for the installation of a 10 kW wind system by June 30 can qualify for a state rebate of over $14,000 upon it’s installation,” says Hank Zevallos of locally-based Home Windpower. “Such a system will produce a monthly average about 1400 kilowatt hours monthly with our annual average Tehachapi wind speed of 12 miles per hour.
Winds don’t have to blow all the time to get this monthly average because net metering law allows the system to run your utility meter backwards as it produces electrical energy.”
Funding for the Renewable Energy Program is collected from the ratepayers of four investor-owned utilities in California to support existing, new and emerging renewable electricity generation technologies. However, these rebate levels are set to expire at midnight June 30.
“Odds are the rebates may be continued, but at a lower level after that date,” added Zevallos. “It is my recommendation that those interested do something prior to June 30 so that they secure rebates at the current levels.”
