With a group of core players returning, there is optimism in Warrior country for Tehachapi to collect a fourth-consecutive South Sequoia League championship this coming winter.

The first steps toward that goal have been initiated during the month of June, with Tehachapi competing with some of the elite high schools around the county in summer league play at South and Centennial High Schools.

“In the summer there are a lot of clubs going on in different sports, so even though we have a lot of girls out for basketball, our full team compliment is probably still yet to be determined,” said Warrior coach Bill Carll. “Tournament play and practice are all important early on.”

Summer league basketball is different from regulation play, with a 20-minute running clock in two halves. Players are also given only one free-throw on fouls, with the made attempt worth two-points. Fouls collected on made-baskets are automatically worth three points.

So far in five games, Tehachapi has been able to get victories against East-Bakersfield and Ridgeview-Bakersfield, and most recently last Thursday against Arvin, 29-22.

Jana Smith led Tehachapi in the win with 16 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots. The Lady Warriors went up in the contest early 11-0, but Arvin fought back to tie the game at 19-19 in the second half. With Tehachapi up 24-22 in the latter half of the game, Selena Torres made a one shot to put the Warriors up for good and the eventual 29-22 victory.

The Warriors will have a big test this next week against Bakersfield Christian, who last season won the East Sierra League title with a 20-7 (10-0 ESL) record. The Eagles feature one of the best three-point shooters in the valley in Demmi Nunn, who made 63 treys last season. Stacey Butler, who led BCHS with 405 points last year, will also be in the line-up.

This week, Tehachapi has games against Centennial on Tuesday at Centennial and the before-mentioned Bakersfield Christian game this Thursday at South High at 7 p.m.

“We have a lot of young players this year, against Arvin we only had one senior in Megan (Duggan) that played,” added Carll. “But there were a lot of young teams last year, especially in league, so it should be competitive.”

Tehachapi will return two first team All-SSL selections in Jana Smith (12.6 points per game, 6.6 rebounds per game, 41 blocked shots) and Katie Avila (20.0 points per game, 5.6 rebounds per game, 57 assists). The Warriors finished last season 22-6 (9-1 SSL), winning their third consecutive league title.
