Leeland H. Bergeron of Mojave, has been selected as a president’s scholar for the incoming class of 2006 at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). As a result, the graduated senior from Tehachapi High School will receive a full four-year scholarship from the university.
Established in 1995, the President’s Scholars Program is recognized as the premier program of its kind in the state. It was created to bring valedictorians and National Merit scholars from California high schools to Cal State Long Beach.
Graduates of the program are attending prestigious graduate and professional schools such as Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth, UC Berkeley Law School, Stanford, Duke and Johns Hopkins medical schools, UCLA Dental School and CSULB. Others have started successful careers at companies like Disney, Boeing and TRW.
Bergeron, the valedictorian for the Class of 2006 at THS, was selected for the program from an applicant pool of more than 600 students statewide. He will be among 50 new scholars joining the university when fall classes begin on Aug. 28, bringing the total number of high school valedictorians and National Merit Scholars attending the university to about 350.
The son of Lawrence and Kathleen Bergeron of Mojave, Bergeron is planning to major in English with a focus on creative writing at Cal State Long Beach.
“When my high school counselor told me about the President’s Scholars Program offered by California State University, Long Beach, I knew that it was too great an opportunity to pass up,” Bergeron wrote in his application essay. “I feel that the President’s Scholars Program will help me to commit to my education as well as afford me the chance to enjoy a more well-rounded college experience.”
As a President’s Scholar, Bergeron will receive a full scholarship covering general student fees, an annual book allowance and paid housing in the campus residence halls for four years. In addition, he will have priority registration, personal academic counseling and more. The total value of the scholarship is about $35,000.
The benefits for qualifying valedictorians and National Merit scholars from accredited California high schools are made possible through the support of the CSULB Alumni Association, President’s Associates and the Corporate Scholars Council.
With more than 34,500 students, Cal State Long Beach is the second-largest campus in the 23-campus Cal State system, the largest public higher education system in the nation.
