The Golden Hills GATE Program was honored on June 13 at the Tehachapi Unified School District Board Meeting for providing specialized enrichment and extended learning for students who have demonstrated exceptional abilities.
There are currently 44 fourth and fifth grade students enrolled in the school’s GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) program. The students have two one-hour sessions per week, stressing and developing computer technology skills.
Following many of the ideas from John Wooden’s “Pyramid of Success,” the program encourages the students to define goals and explore career options and develop business plans.
Students learned to use computers and became knowledgeable in using Excel, Power Point and Movie Maker.
Each student then had a “pizza assignment.” They developed recipes, menus, advertising for their company and delivery schedules and then presented their business plan using the Power Point computer program.
Using Microsoft Excel, they charted holidays and produced graphs for their grades.
An exciting and creative component of the year was producing a short film explaining everyday life to an alien. The students wrote their own scripts and produced the short film using Movie Maker. Madison Jacobson and Jade Delgadillo produced a film explaining “How to Get Ready in The Morning.”
When asked what he learned about the project, Kameron Gilbert said, “The computer training will probably help me a lot in getting a job. I learned how to use a lot of different programs. I want to be a reporter and it helped in learning how to use the microphone.”
“These are awesome kids,” said coordinator Tina Barrett.
