Named Gift awards honor those who have helped further goals of the American Association of University Women. Each AAUW branch throughout the nation is allowed to make awards based on its support of the Educational Foundation. Tehachapi Mountain Branch was entitled to two honorees this year, Gayel Pitchford and Hanson Williams.
Gayel has devoted herself to promoting music in Tehachapi. She is a private music teacher, primarily of violin. However, she spends lots of extra time providing musical opportunities and encouragement for her students. She has established a youth orchestra, which practices every Monday evening in her studio. She buys the music and volunteers her time. She is on the board of directors of Tehachapi Performing Arts and Museum Center and works tirelessly to promote this complex. She has revitalized a chapter of California Old Time Fiddlers and initiated fiddle jams held the 2nd Saturday of each month. She is concert master of Tehachapi Community Orchestra and president of the board of directors. Gayel is most deserving of receiving the Named Gift Award.
Hanson Williams was selected to receive a Named Gift Award because he makes AAUW look good with his camera. Through his photographs, Hanson has helped AAUW and many other community groups get out their message. He has made video presentations to promote Tehachapi Community Orchestra and the Fiddle Contest. He has photographed AAUW activities this year, and historian Tommie Williams has used his picture collages to prepare a wonderful history scrapbook. AAUW is proud to recognize Hanson Williams as someone who is very special to AAUW Tehachapi Mountain Branch.
Membership in AAUW is open to any graduate with an Associate of Arts Degree or higher. Contact Judy at 821-7035 for further information.
