It may be pretty messy and bumpy downtown right now but the art galleries and other stores are still up and running. Just goes to show that you can’t keep a starving artist or crafter from doing their thing.
Every day our intrepid members trek downtown to open up Gallery ‘n’ Gifts, as they have every day for over 27 years. Right on the main corner (of Tehachapi Boulevard and Green Street), this cooperative, sponsored by the Tehachapi Valley Arts Association, is also currently undergoing a face lift.
We think it’s worth it to brave the dust and dirt, the noise and parking inconveniences just to make sure visitors to Tehachapi have an opportunity to see what our town is all about. And once the dust settles you will see the new paint job on the trim and some new signage.
Gallery ‘n’ Gifts has had visitors from almost every country in the world over the past 27 years and sometimes we think maybe even a few off-worlders who just didn’t identify themselves as such. We welcome everyone and applaud those who are willing to come in during this construction phase.
Over the years we’ve had people who have moved away but have come back just to see us and we’ve even had locals who come in and tell us they have lived in Tehachapi for years and they didn’t even know we existed.
Well, whether you do it regularly or not, maybe now is the time to shop locally. Between gas prices and travel time there are a lot of advantages to shopping in Tehachapi first.
Give it a try while everything is a mess. You too can claim you braved the elements to visit the stores downtown, saw what is happening and plan to visit again often to keep up with the progress. Our starving artists will certainly appreciate your efforts.
