While the Tehachapi High School basketball team did not end on a high note with a 39-19 loss to South-Bakersfield last Thursday in summer league basketball, the overall performance for the Warriors was a positive one, winning seven out of 10 games with the majority of the victories over quality Yosemite Division teams.
“Overall it was a good tournament for us,” said head coach Chris Olofson. “We got to see a lot of our guys in different situations on the floor and that will help with our mindset going into the season and each player’s capabilities.”
Although Tehachapi lost to North, South and Bakersfield High, they did reel in victories over East, Foothill, Golden Valley, Highland, Liberty, West, and most importantly Bakersfield Christian, who looks to be the top contender for the Warriors in the South Sequoia League next season.
Last season, Tehachapi enjoyed one of the best years ever recorded in mens basketball, finishing the year 20-5 (9-1 SSL). That accomplishment was reached despite having a 2-8 record in summer league play in 2005.
“We changed our philosophy a bit this year coming into summer league, we experimented probably more last year than we did this time around,” said Olofson. “This summer our goal was trying to keep our core guys on the floor and trying to keep the guys that will be playing the most together on at the same time.”
Against South, Jacob Rombouts led the way with six points and six rebounds, Vincent Saavedra had five points, three rebounds and two steals, Aaron Drake had a three pointer, and Chad Farewell and Matt Rombouts had four rebounds apiece.
“We wish we could have ended the tournament with a win but we’re satisfied overall,” Olofson added. “If we can stay healthy it should be a good year for us coming up this next season.”
