The Barracuda swim team traveled to Bakersfield on July 8 and 9 for the Aqua Aces two-day high-point meet. Twenty-one swimmers participated in this swim meet against much larger swim teams. Even with so few of our swimmers, we pulled off taking the third place high-point trophy for overall team points, a great accomplishment for our team of dedicated swimmers.
The swim team was led by head coach Tessa Brown and assistant coach Sara Brady. Sara dominated the girls 15-and-over events while Tessa won all six of her races and the girls 15-and-over high-point Trophy.
Tessa started swimming with the Barracuda’s at age 8 and holds numerous meet and team swimming records. This was her final Barracuda swim meet as a participant and will be moving on in the fall where she will be attending college at California State University, Bakersfield and joining the university swim team. Tessa has been coaching for the Barracuda swim team and the Tehachapi Valley Aquatic swim team for the past three years and was recently named as head coach for the Barracudas.
Turning on the speed and winning high-point trophys were Dominic Avalos, 10; against stiff competition Joshua Avalos, 7; Cody Brown, 12, who only practiced one day this season and still won five of his six events and had a time improvements in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke; Colleen Chung, 12, with four time improvements; Katie Chung, 14, dominated the girls events with five wins; Joshua Sparling, 7, with three time improvements; and Escoto Fallon, 12, with four time improvements.
In the relay event are 11- to 12-year-old team with swimmers Cody Brown, Lexi Zimmerman, Vallarie Neang and Dominic Avalos, who took second place against stiff competition. Christina Deporto, 18, won the 100-yard fly event; Vanessa Neang won the girls 9-year-old 100-yard backstroke race; Andrew Sparling took first place in the boys 9-year-old 50-yard backstroke; Lexi Zimmerman won the 11-year-old girls 100-yard individual medley event; Sean Banks, 7, turned on the speed, taking two second-place finishes; and Andrew Bartel, 10, took a second place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke.
