One day Jesus told a parable about two sons who were asked to work by their father. One son at first refused to work but later did, while the other son at first agreed to work but later didn't. The first son, who disobeyed for a while but later repented, represents people who fall short of God's will but confess their sins and receive forgiveness. The second son, who said he would obey but didn't do it, represents people who boast of their good works, but do not actually serve God.
Most of us can relate the first son because we know that we have not always served God with all our time, talents and treasures. Like the first son, we have admitted our guilt, we have changed our way and now we are trying to live according to God's will.
But many of us have, at times, acted like the second son in the parable. This is the son who talked the good talk but failed to walk the good walk.
The second son reminds me of Saint Peter who said he would be willing to die for Jesus but then denied knowing the Lord. This is the way we act when we make a profession of our faith and our desire to serve God but then act in selfishness or greed.
A third kind of son would be the one who both said, "Yes" to his father's request and then actually did the work. Jesus lived this kind of life when. He agreed to come into the world to die for our sins and then He completed God's plan for our salvation.
May God help us to trust in Jesus and to live as He did, both agreeing to serve God and then actually doing it.
