With a South Sequoia League title to defend from 2005, the Tehachapi High School volleyball team has been in full force with summer workouts these past few weeks in anticipation of the year ahead.
The Lady Warriors, who finished last season 27-6-3 (9-1 SSL), are looking to put together another league championship season and a repeat trip to the section finals.
“We have a lot of strong players this year, from incoming freshman, upcoming junior varsity, to our returning varsity players,” said head coach Sally White. “We are emphasizing gelling together and playing together and so far everyone is doing well.”
The interest in volleyball in Tehachapi has grown exponentially the past few years, by in large part to the success of the Lady Warriors and the comprehensive program already established in the community.
“We have a strong parks and recreation camp for girls that are third graders on up, plus a strong group of junior high teams led by Walt Powell,” added White. The interest and success has been excitin, and it all came together last season with a great varsity season.”
In 2005, the Tehachapi varsity team capped a strong league season with a championship-clinching five-set victory over Arvin. Viewed by many as the most exciting single game of all Warrior athletics last year, Tehachapi avenged an earlier season loss to the Bears with a 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 24-26, 15-6 thrilling win on the road.
“When we got to the gym, Arvin had posters that had ‘10-0 SSL champs’ and they had t-shirts printed that people wore saying ‘undefeated SSL champs,’ as if they had already won the game,” said White. “So to go on the road and take the championship under those circumstances was very thrilling, it was electric.”
Tehachapi will benefit from the return of many key players from last year’s team, led by Lauren Schaklock, who led the team with 380 kills and 263 blocks. Also back is Leah White, who tallied 139 kills and led the team with 238 receptions, 175 digs and 53 aces. Sami Janzen also looks to add to her numbers as a sophomore last season of 63 kills, 51 blocks, 36 digs and 43 receptions, while Chelsi Dominguez is primed to build on her 26-ace /104-dig season last year with a more prominent role in 2006.
The league itself will have a new look for the upcoming year with Arvin’s head coach Steven Bentley moving on to Bakersfield’s new school, Frontier High, and Bakersfield Christian coming into the league after a 31-7 (10-0 ESL) record and a deep state playoff run from 2005.
“The league should be tough next year and we’re excited about our returnees and the girls that we have coming up, along with the teams that we will have to face,” White said. “We’re looking forward to continuing to practice hard and get ready.”
The volleyball team is currently in the midst of a camp at the THS gymnasium all this week from 8 a.m. to noon. Varsity and junior varsity volleyball tryouts are set for the week of Aug. 7 to 11 from 6:30 to 9 p.m., while frosh/soph tryouts are the following week from Aug. 15 to 17 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Tehachapi’s first match action will be an inter-league scrimmage on Thursday, Aug. 24 at the THS gym with all SSL teams set to attend.
