Sometimes we take our riding ability for granted. There are many horseback riders who need some extra help to achieve just a fraction of what many of us do on a daily basis. Alice Coghlan is someone who has been helping special riders achieve their goals.
Coghlan runs two groups for riders with disabilities at her ranch in the Brite Valley area of Tehachapi. One is called “High Spirits,” which is for anyone with a disability and/or high risk kids. She and helper Danny Freng also run Special Olympics Equestrians. They run a training venue and riding program in cooperation with the Kern Co/Tehachapi Special Olympic Equestrian Team. The group usually participates at the annual Tri-County Equestrian Olympics.
“They can start as early as 4 years old and there is no upper age limit,” Coghlan said. “We have some riders older than 50. We don't charge, so we're always looking for donations and sponsors. There are a lot of children and others who could benefit from riding, but can't afford it. We try to make it happen for them.”
The group is hosting a fundraiser on Sept. 9 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the ranch. There will be rider demonstrations and general information on the group, followed by a barbecue dinner for $10. “I'm hoping for a few surprise local dignitaries and the like,” Coghlan said.
For more information on the group, the barbecue and sponsorship, call Coghlan at 822-7272.
