Vigil Service was held on Wednesday, Aug. 9, and Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on Thursday, Aug. 10, at St. Malachy Catholic Church for long time Tehachapi resident David Bruce Cord, 52, who passed away surrounded by his loving family on Aug. 6.
Dave was born in Loma Linda, California on May 17, 1954, to parents James and Marilyn Cord. Dave moved to the Tehachapi area at the age of twelve and began school at Jacobsen Junior High. In high school, Dave was the center for the Tehachapi High School Warriors varsity football team. He was known as the “Gentle Giant,” a nickname that stuck with him the rest of his life.
After graduation, David attended Porterville Junior College. Dave had worked at his father's Chevron station and served as a Deputy Reserve Sheriff. For a brief time, he also drove a train at Calico Ghost Town. But Dave's heart remained with law enforcement. He began a career with the Kern County Sheriff's Department in 1978. The career spanned 27 years before his retirement for medical reasons in 2005. Twenty-five of those 27 years were spent as a Deputy Sheriff in the Tehachapi area.
In 1982, Dave married Joan Pogon in a ceremony at St. Malachy Catholic Church.
They went on to raise their family in Tehachapi surrounded by life-long friends. David was a “collector”. He collected cars (all red), baseball cards and friends. He spent every Super Bowl Sunday in Las Vegas with many of those friends. He was the ultimate sports fan and never stopped being a Warrior!
When Dave was 17, he and his father began to restore a 1931 Model A, which was completed late Friday night by his many friends and members of the Tehachapi Car Club. On Saturday, Dave was able to enjoy a day with his family, friends and “Miss Daisy” (the Model A), riding in it to the cemetery to show the car to his dad. Dave passed away that night.
Dave is survived by his wife, Joan Pogon-Cord of Tehachapi; daughters, Courtney and Ashley, both of Tehachapi; aunts and uncles, Pat Durlinger of Brentwood, John and Sheryl Carlisle of Crossville, Tennessee, Charlotte and George Purdy of Cherokee Village, Arkansas, Silvia and A.L. Parker also of Cherokee Village; sister-in-law and husband, Cyryl and Dan Yannitell of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; brother-in-law, Thomas Pogon of Bakersfield; nieces and nephews, Gina and Will Reinhardt of Bryan, Texas, Anthony and Denise Iannitelli of Austin, Texas; and many cousins in California, Missouri and Texas.
Following the service at St. Malachy interment took place at Tehachapi Public Cemetery - Eastside. Wood Family Funeral Service handled the arrangements.
