Thirty years ago Tehachapi had two locally-owned and operated department stores; Yaeger’s and Koutroulis’. The home town drug store was last owned by local resident Peter Gong. Our grocery stores were family operated; Town and Country market, C&P Market and Valley Foods.  If I thought harder I could think of several more home town businesses that went under because of the appearance of chain stores.  In fact, during the 70s, people moving to our small town were heard to complain that there wasn’t any good place to shop in Tehachapi. No big stores.

Tsk, tsk! Anyone who has not been able to enter a family-owned store and got the personalized attention that goes with it has missed a bit of living. Well, the big stores are here. The days of hometown small business are gradually disappearing forever. It’s too late to worry what effect another big store will have on the already existing chain stores. I doubt WalMart can do any more harm than the huge Home Depot that is soon to be upon us. Big business is here to stay. Let the games begin! May the best chain store win!

Ditto. The larger stores are here to stay due to the simple matter of economics and free market. Just like mankind left the stone age behind, by his own hand in the name of progress, these stores are just another step in the economic evolutionary ladder. They are probably not going away without some catostophic or cataclysmic event.

I could'nt agree more. I was born here 55 years ago and have seen all the changes. Back in the 70's/80's the land developers didn't ask if we wanted all our beautiful orchards ripped out for apartments and homes. No one sent invitations to all the people from the big city asking them to move here. Now our small quaint town is gone and the big city atmosphere is here. Now we have traffic cogestion, polluted air, a huge strain on our water supply, and a higher crime rate. The fact of the matter is, all this has happened and it's not going away, so we all have to except that, and live together. I to, welcome Home-depot and Walmart, and the only influence it will hopefully have on the other stores, is shelves being better stocked, employees being more helpful, and possibly more positives taking place.
