Brittany Sigston competed at the Summer Quarter Horse Circuit of Santa Clara Valley, in Watsonville, July 20 to 23 in Youth Cutting.
It was a long four days, but with a total combined score of 250, Brittany made Circuit Champion and received a bronze NCHA Trophy. Brittany has been training with Chip Cardon of Caliente and has done exceptionally well under his tutorship.
Cutting is a competition where the rider is given 2 1/2 minutes to separate a few cows from a herd of cattle that is held against a back wall of the arena. Usually, cutting two or three cows give the rider the proper amount of time needed to show their horse. The rider must make at least one deep cut, which is riding deep into the herd to bring out a cow. Judges give extra credit for selecting a specific cow and driving it from deep in the herd.
Once a cow is separated, the rider sets the rein hand down and allows the horse to work, mirroring the cows movement to keep it from returning to the herd. A rider can cue the horse only with their legs. If the cow stops or moves away from the horse the rider may lift the reins and stop the horse in order to cut another cow until the time limit is up.
We are very proud of Brittany and look forward to The approaching High School Rodeo Season where she will compete in varoius Rodeo events with other youth in California. Congratulations on your win!
