Don L. Barnes, a resident of Tehachapi, died at this home on Friday, Aug. 18. He was 55 years old. He is survived by his mother, Fern, of Linden; his sister, Donna, of Stockton; his wife, Heather, and daughters, Megan, Kimberly and Brandi Cole, his son-in-law, Chad, and granddaughters, Lynden and Katherine, all of Tehachapi. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert.
Don was born in Minnesota. He grew up in South Dakota where his parents were ranchers. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1977, and worked for over 30 years as a rancher raising steers, cow/calf pairs and purebred red angus. He was also a property manager in California.
Don was the owner of EZ Bar Ranch and the operator of a business specializing in goats and weed abatement, using goats to prevent wildfires. Don was featured on the ABC News show 20/20 and in Small Business Magazine because of this innovative business method. Before moving with his family to Tehachapi in 2003, he was featured in the Orange County Register as “Mission Viejo’s last cowboy.”
Memorial contributions may be made to Tehachapi Future Farmers of America.
