A vigil service was held on Tuesday, Aug. 22, and Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated on Wednesday, Aug. 23, at St. Malachy's Catholic Church for Tehachapi resident George Louis Matzenger, 77, who passed away on Aug. 18.

George was born in Stamford, Conn., on Oct. 16, 1928, the youngest child of Frank and Martha Matzenger. He met his bride to be, Margaret Theresa Spath, on a blind date and married her in 1952 in Stamford, Conn. They have six children, 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

George was the kind of man that chuckled softly to himself. He always had a joke or a story ready to tell. He was a born storyteller and, as with any truly good storyteller, his stories got bigger over time. He made friends wherever he went. He had an ease and charisma about him that only comes from being a true gentleman. He was kind and caring, and thought of nothing but his family. When he walked into a room he brought animation with him. He'd say, “Let's get this show on the road!”

George was a fun loving free spirit, he loved to laugh and tease. His motto was, “When the foods gone, I'm gone!” The joke was that the family crest was a knife and fork. He loved to build and create things with leftover this and that. George was much loved and will be missed by all who knew him.

Mr. Matzenger is survived by his wife, Margaret, of Tehachapi; sons, Carl and Kathy Matzenger, of Ojai, Donald and Kathie Matzenger, of Tehachapi, Mark and Jackie Matzenger, of Mission Viejo, and George and Lynn Matzenger, Jr., of Oxnard; daughters, Debbie and Dan Soutar, of Ohio and Darlene Matzenger, of Costa Mesa; sister, Dorothy Idrillo of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and brother, Robert Matzenger, of Fla.
Services were officiated by Father Joel Davadilla and Deacon Richard Lambert. Interment followed at Tehachapi Public Cemetery - Westside.  Wood Family Funeral Service handled the arrangements.
