Tehachapi resident William Oneida Shurtz, 92, passed away on Friday, Aug.25 in Bakersfield.

Mr. Shurtz was born Dec. 12, 1913 in Boone, Iowa to parents Oney and Edith Watson Shurtz. He served his country in World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific theater and returned to civilian life on Oct. 9, 1945. On Nov. 23, 1963 in Eagle Rock, he married Elizabeth Louise Briggs. Bill was employed by the Los Angeles City School District for 42 years.

William and Elizabeth moved to the Tehachapi area in 1995. He was a long-time member of the Community Church and served there as an Elder. Bill loved to water ski and was an avid bowler. He and Elizabeth liked to travel, touring Europe, Alaska and crossing through the Panama Canal. They also traveled the United States extensively in their motor home. William was full of life. A fun loving jokester and tease is how he is described by his family.

Mr. Shurtz is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; daughters, Barbara Matthias of Canyon Lake, Texas; and Julie and Walter Bulloch of Tehachapi; grandchildren, James, Kenneth and Wendy Matthias of Canyon Lake, Texas; and Scott Wyatt and Christina Morrison of Tehachapi; great-grandchildren, Mason, Morgan, Wade, Caitlin, Joshua, Elizabeth, Kyle and Jake.

Mr. Shurtz was interred Wednesday, Aug. 29 at 11 a.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements were handled by Wood Family Funeral Service.
