A very short story, but a huge thank you to the Kern County Fire Department who came to the rescue of those who live on Adalante Court in the wee hours of Saturday morning, Sept. 23.
It's bad enough to be awake at that hour, but to be awakened by a neighbor shouting 'FIRE- Joeann, call 911! ' [while she was shepherding her animals as far from the oncoming flames as was possible] was certainly frightening. The Firemen were there in just a few minutes, 'tho' it seemed like an eternity to those of us who were watching the flames advance before the gusts of wind that were driving them. The blaze was knocked down in minutes; the area that it covered was not large but there was a lot of long dry grass that made the flames seem to be twenty feet tall, and left ashes that will give off that peculiar odor until the first rain, but the pumper truck sat at the end of my driveway for almost an hour after the other equipment left -- just to make sure we were safe.
We have a lot of animals up here - our homes are here and we love them.
Thank you, KCFD for saving us much grief.
