Students desiring a little extra help with their math homework can dial in to the “Do the Math” help lines, 636-4357 and toll free (866) 636-6284, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tutors will be available at the same time every Tuesday and Wednesday to help students solve their math problems over the phone in English or Spanish.
Then, starting on Oct. 3, Do the Math is back live on television from 4 to 5 p.m., Tuesdays and Wednesdays, in Arvin, Bakersfield, Delano, Lamont, McFarland, Taft and Tehachapi on Bright House Cable Channel 15, Charter Cable Channel 19 in Boron, California City, Mojave and North Edwards, Channel 46 in Rosamond and Mediacom Cable Channel 8 in Ridgecrest. The same phone help lines are available for student callers to have math problems solved live on TV or privately over the phone by certificated mathematics instructors. Phone line hours remain 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Students can also view the program live or review archives of past programs on the Internet by clicking on the “Do the Math” link at www.kern.org.
Developed by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Office, “Do the Math” features mathematics instruction and tutoring taught to California Department of Education curriculum standards. Students watching at home or in after school programs have the opportunity to see how certificated mathematics instructors solve problems called in by viewers. The program also includes fun features and contests.
Major funding for “Do the Math” comes from the Kern County Superintendent of Schools, Panama-Buena Vista Union School District, Bakersfield City School District, Chevron and Castle and Cook. Additional support is provided by the Kern High School District, Russo’s Books, Golden Empire McDonald’s Owners and Operators and San Joaquin Bank.
