Wanda Martha Stroub, 74, of Tehachapi died Sept. 22. Wanda was a long-time resident of Tehachapi who was active in the community.
Wanda was born Dec. 10, 1931, in Lavaca, Ark. to Ola Mae and Jess Crook. She was raised and attended local schools, playing basketball in high school. She knew her husband, Clyde, all her life and they married on Easter Sunday in 1949. Shortly after, they moved to Buttonwillow, Calif. and started a family.
She started her banking career as a teller at Community National Bank in Buttonwillow. When the family moved to Tehachapi in 1967, she worked for First Western Bank, which later became Lloyds Bank. When the bank was later acquired by Sanwa, she was promoted to branch manager. She continued her banking career at the then newly-formed Sierra National Bank as assistant to the CEO, retiring in 1989. After retirement she continued working as an auditor and served as a member of the Sierra National Bank Board of Directors.
In addition to her banking career, Wanda kept books for Clyde’s hardware store, in the building that is now Village Grill.
Wanda was active in the Tehachapi community, serving as president of the Tehachapi Chamber of Commerce from 1976 to 1977. She was also active on the Mountain Festival Committee, serving many years on the steering committee and as treasurer. She was treasurer for the Salvation Army, and was also a member of Toastmasters’ International.
Her hobbies included RVing with her husband Clyde. She loved watching pro basketball, football, golf, and tennis.
She is survived by Clyde, her husband of 57 years, of Tehachapi; her mother, Ola Mae Crook of Fort Smith, Ark.; her son, Allen, and his wife, Helen, of Bakersfield; and her daughter, Faye, and her husband, Terry Miller, of Dutton, Mont. In addition, she leaves her sisters and their husbands, Letsey and Dale McDaniel, of Mountainburg, Ark.; Delphia Lindsey of Fort Smith, Ark.; Tina and Dane Douglas of Lavaca, Ark.; her brother, Don, and wife, Carol Crook, of Greenwood, Ark.; and Rob Crook, of Fort Smith, Ark. Wanda also leaves grandchildren Sarah Wells, of Grand Junction, Colo.; Stacy Miller, of Dutton, Mont.; Josh Wells and Jess Miller, both of Great Falls, Mont., Melissa Stroub, of Philadelphia, Pa., Christopher and Aubrey Stroub, of Bakersfield, and Matthew and Pam Stroub, of Bakersfield. In addition she leaves eight great-grandchildren.
Wanda was preceded in death by her father, Jess, and brother, Robert.
Services for family only will be conducted at a later date. Arrangements were handled by Wood Family Funeral Service.
