If you knew you were nearing the end of your life and you only had a short time to pray, what would you say to God? Most of us would probably ask God to allow us to die in peace and without a lot of pain or agony.
The Bible tells us that, on the last night of our Lord's life, He offered up prayers to God. Jesus, who knew that He was about to be crucified, took time to pray for His disciples and for all people who would come to faith in Him.
In the upper room with the apostles, after washing their feet and serving them Holy Communion, Jesus looked toward heaven and prayed. He prayed that God would protect the apostles and give them power to accomplish the task that was ahead of them.
Then Jesus prayed for everyone who would ever believe in Him. All Christians today were prayed for by our Lord when He asked God to keep us unified in our testimony as we share the message of salvation with all the people of the world.
Next Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane where He offered another prayer. This time the Savior, who was overwhelmed with grief, asked God if it was possible for Him to not have to go through with the suffering. But, even in this terrifying moment, Jesus prayed, "Not my will, but your will be done."
Soon after this Jesus was arrested, convicted and crucified. From the cross our Lord continued to pray. With incredible compassion, He prayed that God would forgive the people who were doing this to Him.
At the very end of His life, Jesus gave us a powerful demonstration of prayer. May we all take time to pray and stay close to our Lord.
