R.I.S.E. (Riding Instruction for Special Equestrians) is having a benefit Trail and Poker ride on Oct. 21. The ride is at the Clear Creek B ranch in Hart Flat, where Noah Berry Jr. once lived.
The cost is $50 and includes a semi-guided ride on well-maintained trails. Poker prizes will be given to the best 10 hands. A BBQ tri-tip dinner with live entertainment and barn dance will follow. Another special riding group, the High Spirit Riders, recently participated in the 13th annual Tri-Valley Special Olympics/Kiwanis Club Invitational Equestrian Competition held at the Hansen Dam Equestrian Center in Lakeview Terrace. The group had 13 participants compete and the winners in the different age groups included Steven Davidson, first in Trail and third in Equitation; Andrew Davidson, 3rd in both Equitation and Trail; Erik Davidson, second in Equitation and first in Trail; Mike Sargent, second in Showmanship; Lorraine Pleis, third in Equitation and Trail; Laura Jefferson, second in both Equitation and Trail; Mathew Lewis, second in Equitation and first in Trail; Emily Lewis, first in Equitation and second in Trail; Erika Marquet, first in Equitation and second in Trail; Danny Leland, first in Equitation; Rachel Leland, first in both Equitation and Trail; Nathan Leland, first in Equitation and Kevin Manning, first in Trail and fourth in Equitation.
Coordinator of the High Spirit Riders, Alice Coghlan, received Coach of the Year honors. “We had a wonderful day and were proud of our athletes for doing so well,” Coghlan said. “And I was flabbergasted to receive my award. The Tehachapi Western Events had a big turnout of 31 riders for its recent Playday. The winners in the Open Division included Marcia Williams (Barrels, Poles, Bi-Rangle), Ashley Pursley (Speed Barrels) and Jessie Brooks (Keyhole). In the Youth Division, Robin McCaffrey placed first overall in all five events. The other winners included Morgan Gibbs, Brody Manness, Manuel Ochua and Wyatt Enns. Brody, age 3, probably was the youngest participant ever at TWEA event.
TWEA also has its general meeting on Oct. 2 at Jake's Steak House at 7 p.m. and a Halloween Trail & Poker Ride on Oct. 14. There will be prizes for best poker hand and costumes. For more information click www.tehachapiwesternevents.com or call Al Anders, 823-7046.
ETI Corral 83 also has a Trail & Poker Ride in cooperation with the Stallion Springs Trail Association on Oct. 7. The fee is $20 for members and $25 for non-members and includes poker hand and lunch. This ride showcases the work done on the trails of Stallion Springs. Corral 83 president and resident Susan Wellington and others have worked tirelessly in keeping the trails clear and open. Also at the ride, Animal Communicator Lydia Hiby will be the group's special guest.
The Corral also has its general meeting on Oct. 3 and a trip to Montana de Oro from Oct. 22 to 27. For this and other info, call Wellington at 822-8131.
The Dust N Diamonds Equestrian Drill Team has been busy. It recently rode in the Tehachapi Mountain Festival Parade and performed at the rodeo. DND will continue to ride and practice as long as weather permits in preparation for the 2007 drill season. The Tehachapi Dressage Society has its final event, a Competition/Musical Freestyle Clinic, on Oct. 14 at the Bear Valley Springs Equestrian Center. A clinic will follow Oct. 15.
