The junior varsity, sophomore, and freshmen teams all clinched playoff births with shutouts against the Arvin Grizzlies while the Varsity team lost another tough battle, ending their post-season hopes. All four teams will be in action against the Southwest Mustangs at Stockdale High School in Bakersfield on Oct. 21, with the first round of the playoffs set for Oct. 28.
Varsity: Grizzlies 17, Tomahawks 8. For the second consecutive week the Tomahawks took the lead into halftime only to fall short, as the Grizzlies outlasted the Tehachapi seniors 17-8. After a hard hitting, scoreless first quarter the Arvin Grizzlies jumped out in front midway through the second with two long pass completions, the second one going for a score. The Tomahawks (1-5) managed to block the two-point conversion kick and returned the ensuing on-side kick-off 40 yards to put themselves in scoring position. The Tomahawks were able to punch it in for a score four plays later on fourth and goal from the three-yard line with just under a minute to play in the half, converting on the PAT to take a 8-6 halftime lead. The Grizzlies (2-4) received the opening kick off in the second half and used up the entire third quarter clock with a long drive that was stopped just short of a touchdown by a tough Tomahawk defense, forcing a Grizzlies field goal. In the fourth quarter a costly turnover by the Tomahawks gave the Grizzlies a first and goal situation that they were able to capitalize into a touchdown two plays later. With the score 17-8 and under two minutes to play the Tomahawk offense was able to string together a series of pass completions but ran out of time deep in Grizzly territory.
Junior Varsity: Tomahawks 30, Grizzlies 0. The Tomahawks did their part to set up a first place showdown with rival Southwest by shutting out the Grizzlies 30-0. For the sixth straight week the Tomahawks (6-0) dominated in all areas of the game as they gear up for what promises to be an exciting playoff run. The Tomahawks were stopped short of the end-zone on the games opening drive but the defense responded in a big way by tackling the Grizzlies (3-3) for a safety to jump out in front 2-0. After the defensive score it was all Tomahawks as they mixed it up with both the pass and run in impressive fashion. They went on to score twice in the air and twice on the ground to take the blowout win. As usual the Tomahawks defense played a stingy, aggressive game as they recorded their third shutout of the season.
Sophomore: Tomahawks 14, Grizzlies 0. The Tomahawks needed a victory to clinch a playoff birth and they did just that with a 14-0 win over the Arvin Grizzlies. The Tomahawks (4-2), who have relied heavily on the run this season for most of their offensive production, caught the Grizzly defense off guard by completing some well executed pass plays in the first and second quarters. In the first half after both teams traded possessions with solid defensive stands, with the Tomahawks managing to move the ball down the field, grinding out yardage on the ground. Faced with a fourth and three at the Grizzly 12-yard line the Tomahawks faked a run to the inside and went to the air for a touchdown strike. After stopping the Grizzlies (2-4) on their next possession, the Tomahawks picked up where they left off from their last offensive series, starting their drive off with a long 35-yard completion followed by another seven-yard touchdown pass to take a 14-0 lead into halftime. In the second half both teams struggled to move the ball as both defenses played an outstanding half. Fortunately for the Tomahawks they were able to make their first half lead stand en route to their second shutout of the season.
Freshmen: Tomahawks 15, Grizzlies 0. The Freshmen Tomahawks got the shutout train rolling by blanking the Grizzlies 15-0 to clinch a spot in the GEYF Southern Conference playoffs. It took a while for the Tomahawk offense to get rolling but once they did they never looked back. After a scoreless opening quarter the Tomahawks (4-2) put together an impressive drive near the end of the first half, scoring with less then a minute to play. After a successful two-point conversion, the Tomahawks led 8-0 at halftime. The second half was a mirror of the first two quarters as the swarming Tomahawk defense shut down the Grizzlies (0-6). The Tomahawk offense continued to plow over the Grizzly defense as they put together a 60-yard scoring drive culminated with a one-yard scoring plunge to seal the victory and their second shutout.
