The Tehachapi Community Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. David Newby, will commence its ninth season of free classical music on Sunday, November 5th, 4:00 p.m., at Country Oaks Baptist Church. The concert will feature pianist Shun-Lin (“Sam”) Chou in a performance of Mozart’s “Piano Concerto No. 23 in A Major” and will take advantage of the church’s Yamaha concert grand piano.
Chou came to the United States from Taiwan when he was nine, several years after he began studying piano. “The only music teacher in my hometown of 100,000 taught piano. If he taught cello, I’d be a different man today.” His original ambition was to be a physician, but he switched to music with only two years of study to go, earning advanced degrees from the University of Michigan and from the Eastman School, where he also earned a Performer’s Certificate.
The concert will also feature Symphony No. 4 in D minor by Robert Schumann and Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Op. 96.
